It took a little while to get to Heidelberg, so we started off with lunch. The Ritterstub is located in the peaked building at the end of this street:
The first time we visited Heidelberg, we walked up the mountain on what seemed like a thousand steps. This time we were smart and took the funicular:
A view of the castle from below when we first arrived in Heidelberg:
Luckily, it mostly cleared up, but there was still a haze left by the time we got to the top.
We were fascinated the first time we visited with the free-standing ruins, and we were again this time too!
A couple of group shots:
And sunset from the castle:
Ian has a picture with him in front of this tower in 1988, so we recreated the shot 20 years later:
And decided to make it a family tradition with Sophie posing there too:
Sophie on the bridge with the castle in the background:
All of us in front of the castle:
We had a little time to wait until the train came, so we enjoyed some refreshments in the market--Glühwein (mulled wine), potato pancakes fresh from the fryer with apple sauce and/or garlic sauce, and candied nuts...yum!

That is the funniest picture of you guys in that statue mask looking think! I love it!
Mindy,
Maggie and I are very happy to see you and your family together and having a great time in France. Keep taking the pictures as this gives us a glimpse of how your family is doing. France is so beautiful in your pictures and Sophie is absolutely adorable. I know we do not get to see her much but someday when we get a chance to come out and visit, we hope to see all of you.
I know my Mom would be so proud of you and Ian and would have spent as much time as she could with you and Sophie. She loved you so much and I know I have been a little hard headed sometime, but I have come to the conclusion that family is more important than anything in the world.
Have a gret time and I will write again soon.
Love
Blake and Maggie
Thanks, Uncle Blake. I think of Grandma a lot on my travels, especially when I'm places that I traveled with her. I feel sad sometimes that she didn't get to meet Sophie, but I know she's looking down on us and smiling.
