Random Pictures of Sophie and Life in General

So our life isn't always travel and glamour. We spend our fair share of time at home in Strasbourg doing normal every day things, enjoying the city we live in, and recently, for me, trying out new French recipes.

When the students first arrived, we had an opening dinner with all of them and the faculty. I forgot to take pictures during the entire dinner, and then suddenly remembered I had the camera when Sophie's dessert arrived. It was on the kids' menu, so we were really surprised at how HUGE it was. (And by the way, I had the most awesome "Sparkling Soup" made of champagne and diced up fruit.) As you can tell, Sophie was really excited about her dessert.

An aerial view of the monstrous dessert (Yes, that is ice cream, whipped cream, sprinkles, and candy...a kid's dream!):

For her size, she did a pretty good job eating that thing up!

A couple of weeks ago, France had a special day (which they apparently do a couple of times a year) when all museums in the country are open free for the public. We decided to go to the Strasbourg history museum. It was interesting because it was a combination of everything Strasbourg, and had some hands-on stuff for kids, including helmets and traditional dress.

They also had a bell that people could ring. Sophie loved it!

A view of the cathedral on a beautiful fall day:

Last weekend, we took Sophie to see Wall-E in Kehl (in German). She loved it! They had a little display outside the theatre and Sophie posed next to Wall-E.

On our trip on the tram back from Kehl. It was kind of late, so the tram didn't have very many people on it. We let Sophie explore a little.

While we were in Kehl, Ian found a gigantic Ritter Sport candy bar. (This is measured in centimeters, not inches.)

Last weekend was a busy one for us. On Sunday, the Americans in Alsace group had a picnic out in the countryside. It was fun, and we met new people. Sophie was instantly whisked away by the babysitters that they had hired, and Ian and I had a few moments to ourselves. They had all kinds of activities for kids, including face painting. Sophie decided she wanted to be a cat. (She was so attached to this that she cried that night when I had to wash it off, and then had a nightmare in the middle of the night where she asked me to give her her face back!)

They also had a sandbox, which Sophie has come to love. I think we'll have to buy her one for our backyard when we get home.

And finally, my experiments in cooking. I posted a picture of the apple tart that I made a couple of weeks ago (which I have successfully recreated two more times). When we were at the barbecue, someone I know brought a pear and dark chocolate tart, and when I asked her for the recipe, she basically said you throw all the things together. I decided to try it out, and it turned out great (although a little too chocolaty for my taste).

Sophie liked the chocolate part, but not the pears. She made a mess picking the pears off and delving into the chocolate with her fingers!
