Skipping off to Switzerland--The Final Act

Last time I promised that I would show how we got back across the river, and here it is. Basel has an engine-free ferry that will take you across the river by just using a rope and the flow of the current to get across. (This explains the strange angle of the boat in the picture below. The boat isn't going up or down river; it's going straight across, but it has to come across at that angle to use the current to move it horizontally.)

It was hard to take pictures on the boat because we were all so close together, and we're really close to the water...not really the type of boat you want to stand up on. Sophie was just a little nervous:

Once we got across the river, we hiked up the stairs back to the cathedral. The cathedral has an overlook onto the Rhine:

We got to the cathedral just in time for it to close for Saturday mass, so we only got to see the cloister. It was really beautiful and had some great windows and architecture. (I'm sure Ian could tell you the exact style, but I can't.)

And here's a picture of the doors to the cathedral. Unfortunately, it was really hard to get any good pictures of the front since the square in front of it was so small.

And here is Sophie posing in front of the regional train decorated with a map of Alsace. She's working on her posing (and was just a little scared to be so close to the tracks all by herself)!
